Fall homemaking has a personality of its own! There are so many ways to bring warmth and comfort into your home during the fall season. Here are some fall homemaking tips for creating the ultimate cozy home!
Summer homemaking is coming to an end and the fall season is upon us! This time of year is the perfect time to bring warmth, texture, and color into your home. When I think about a cozy home, I think about engaging all of the senses – sight, smell, touch, sound, and even taste!
As homemakers we have the ability to bring all of those elements into our home and provide our family members and guests with simple, yet memorable experiences.
During the cold weather months, people spend so much time indoors. Even though fall isn’t exactly cold, there’s a crispness in the air that the summer months don’t have. In my opinion, this is what makes the fall feel cozy and it inspires me to reflect that feeling within my home!
In this blog post, I have put together some helpful homemaking tips for fall that you will love!

Fall Homemaking Tip #1:
Storage
I know that storage may not be what you think about when you envision a cozy fall home….but hear me out!
Having good storage areas around your home does actually make your space feel more cozy and inviting. Fall is when jackets and boots start to make their way out of the closets and into your front entryway. Those summer clothes that hardly take up any space get packed away, and bulkier items worn during the colder months take their place.
So there’s a good reason why storage is an important element of fall homemaking! Not only does it help keep your home tidy, but you can make your storage solutions match the cozy ambiance of your home! Here are some fall homemaking storage ideas:
- Wicker cubbies or baskets for storing shoes and boots
- Wall hooks for hanging jackets, scarves or hats
- Large baskets for holding extra throw blankets or pillows (could be wicker, metal, or even fabric)
- Fall themed bowls for keys and other small items
Fall Homemaking Tip #2
Engage the Senses
What do we all think about when we think “FALL”? If you’re anything like me, things like warm colors, pumpkin spice aromas, cozy blankets and warm drinks are the things that come to my mind!
As a homemaker, you can make those ideas a reality inside your home and it’s really very simple! Small changes to your home decor create a big impact when done right. Here are some autumn homemaking tips for engaging the senses in your home this fall:
- Diffuse some essential oils to fill your home with the delicious aromas of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla, and more.
- Swap out your throw pillow covers for ones with rich fall colors like rusts, oranges, deep yellows, etc.
- Add some texture by providing a chunky knit throw, or a fuzzy blanket to the couch.
- Offer your family and guests a cup of warm apple cider, or a homemade pumpkin spice latte.
- Open the blinds or curtains to allow the view of the changing leaves to filter into your home.
- Bring some of the outdoors IN, and fill a glass bowl with pine cones, leaves, and other elements of nature to use as a centerpiece on your table.
- If it’s not cold enough for wood-burning stoves just yet, light some fall scented candles around your house to bring a touch of warmth and aroma.
Fall Homemaking Tip #3
Basic Maintenance
This fall homemaking tip isn’t as fun or enticing as the others, but it’s really important for the well-being of your home. In order to keep your home in tip-top shape, it’s important to take care of the basic things.
Fall is a great time to do these basic maintenance tasks in order to prepare for the colder weather. Here are some home maintenance tips to consider for the fall season:
- Pick up any fallen or dead branches that may be laying around your property.
- Rake up the leaves and use them as compost around your property or in your garden.
- If you live somewhere that gets snow in the winter, take a look at your snow blower and make sure it’s working and ready to go.
- If there are any major repairs you are working on, try to finish them before the winter weather sets in.
- Bring in your outdoor furniture or cover it for the winter.
- Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re in good working order.
- If you have a fireplace or wood stove, have a chimney sweep come and do a chimney inspection to make sure everything is clean and safe for another season of use.
- Drain your garden hoses so they don’t freeze in the cooler temperatures.
Fall Homemaking Tip #4
Revamp Your Cleaning Schedule
Summer homemaking looks very different from fall homemaking in my house! Yes I still clean throughout the summer, but we spend the majority of our time outdoors. Therefore, there are definitely some household chores I ignore during the summer, but like to get done in the fall.
Since fall is when things start to cool down and the days get shorter, we tend to naturally be inside more often. This means your indoor to-do list might start to get a little bit longer.
That’s ok though, because fall is the best time to tackle some indoor projects you likely had no interest in during the summer. In fact, I think it’s a good idea to wait until the fall for certain cleaning tasks because where I live, summer humidity can make for a very unpleasant working environment!
Here are some cleaning tasks that are best done in the fall:
- Sort through the closets in your entire home – coat closets, bedroom closets, even the pantry. This is a big job that should be broken up over multiple days. However, getting this done feels so good and there’s always stuff you can get rid of!
- Clean the windows throughout your home. Window glass gets dirty so quickly and in the fall, you want to enjoy the beautiful views of the outside. A great way to maximize this beauty is by having clean windows. Over the summer things like pollen and bugs can get trapped around your windows, so take a day and wipe away all of that mess.
- If you have children, fall is a good time to create some new chore charts for them. The “return to routine” that the fall brings makes it easier for them to adopt some new habits, and as they get older there are more responsibilities they can take on. Use the fall season as a time to assess their capabilities and adjust their chores accordingly.
Always Be Cozy!
I hope these fall homemaking tips have inspired you! Because we all live different lives and our homes are unique, I realize that not every item I’ve listed will apply to everyone. But the main point I hope you walk away with is that fall is a time to be cozy and enjoy your home!
Don’t be afraid of embracing those fall colors and engaging the senses! Doing so can create the ultimate cozy environment you’ve been looking for!
If you feel the need to purchase some new items, try doing so in the most cost-effective way possible. Check out some local thrift stores or even Facebook marketplace.
But don’t feel you HAVE to go shopping in order to make your home cozy. Home is where the heart is – and when you pour your heart into your home, everyone who walks in will feel it!
Blessings!
